This was done at the funeral send-off of Aaliyah, the singer. the number corresponded to the singer-actresses age in years. Doves are of course a Peace symbol. a more usual custom might be the ceremonial ringing of bells (monotone- not carillons or tunes)- again one for every year- this was done at the National Cathedral- when First Lady Jacqueline Onassis was buried.- this custom was also followed for Sarah Bernhardt- and chime gongs in theatres sounded the necessary 78 turns. ( the number of Platinum by the way) My guess the bell-ringing is more dignified and funereral than a release of birds flapping about.
