Why is Augustus Caesar important history?

Augustus Caesar, the former Octavian, was the adopted son of Julius Caesar. After a civil war, which he won, he became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. He transformed the government from the republic to the principate.(The principate is often erroneously called the "Roma Empire") He reformed the army, established stable borders, began the 200 year era of peace called the Pax Romana. Under his rule, the city of Rome was beautified, the water system refurbished, and other accommodations for citizens were made. Literature flourished, and the Augustan era is often called the Golden Age of Rome.
