Why do British people say other people are 'fit'?

if your English and you say some-one is fit you mean there good-looking! like the Americans say hes hot it means hes good-looking or the Irish say hes a ride it means hes good-looking so the English say hes fit it means hes goodlooking! ive been all over the world i know all the slang there is out there!!
