Did Julia Tutwiler ever want to get married?

At this point in time, there is no record that Julia Tutwiler ever had a boyfriend. Since Ms. Tutwiler's contributions were so critical to Alabama's history, there are no references to a romantic attachment in the official biographies.

It would not be strange that Julia had no boyfriend though. In the era she lived, a man would not seek a wife with such strong education and political views. Julia was an educator, a profession that was rather murky in the 1800's. To be a teacher in those days meant that a woman could read and do some arithmetic, nothing much more. Ms. Tutwiler was an exception because she was highly educated, a product of her father's opinion that women were intellectual equals with men. Such a woman would not be sought as a wife. She would have scared men who were looking for a romantic partner and wife.

Her strong views and political activism were highly unusual in her era. She did many "outrageous" things that ultimately changed the face of Alabama's history. Making the U of A accept female students would have marked her as an undesirable marriage partner because she "didn't know her place."
