What is the maximum raise allowed at a poker table?

When I first started playing at a Poker table, I had the same question because the rules can be a bit confusing. The short answer is—it depends on the type of poker game and the betting structure.

In limit poker, the maximum raise is fixed. For example, in a $5/$10 limit game, the bets and raises are set amounts, and you can usually only raise a certain number of times per round.

In no-limit poker, which is what I usually play, the maximum raise is basically the size of your stack. That means you can go “all-in” at any time. So if you’re sitting at the table with $500, your maximum raise in one move is $500.

Then there’s pot-limit poker, where the maximum raise is equal to the size of the pot. This one took me a while to get used to because you have to calculate it quickly during play.

So, the maximum raise really comes down to the rules of the game you’re playing. Whenever I sit at a new poker table, I always double-check what betting structure they’re using so I don’t get caught off guard.
