When you feel paralyzed like that, when you're trying to fall asleep, more often than not it's a dip in your potassium. Many people have this happen (feeling of paralysis in or before sleep) and it scares them. Many people assume it's psychological. But no, it's probably a temporary dip in your potassium level. If you're really concerned, look it up in medical google under Potassium. Either too much potassium or too little can be a big problem. But the brief dips at night are apparently a very brief, temporary and acceptable thing, seeing as so many thousands of people have them. You're not alone. It's not a religious or spiritual issue at all. I have two of friends have had them for all our lives. My doctors told me 30 years ago it was nothing and indeed nothing else has come of them through the years but that's just me. It's not psychological either. But Check with your doctor, an MD hopefully a Neurologist. S/he will problably want a blood test, however, those of us who have had these happen for years can tell you the blood test won't show you much if any-thing because the blood can't be taken from you *exactly* when you experience the night paralysis. It's hard, if not impossible, to diagnose because of that. But ask your doctor anyway. What really Happens is that the part of your brain that controls your awareness is completely awake and the other half which controls your motor skills is still in a deep sleep. I have never experienced this before but a few of my sisters have. It can be misinterpret as a ghost holding you down or seating on your chest. Totally false. This would happen to one sister in particular very often and she was unable to determin if this was a dream or not. She could hear my moms heel shoes out in the kitchen and she was able to use all of her strengh to turn her eyes towards the clock and was able to read the time and then went back to sleep. She had woke up and asked my home if she was in the kitchen at around 5:30am, and she confirmed that she had had in the kitchen around that time. ( Interesting fact- You cant see numbers on a clock in dreams )
