A pleasure craft's Hull Serial Number (HSN), also known as the Hull Identification Number (HIN), must be located on the transom of the vessel, typically on the starboard side, and should be affixed in a way that is permanent and visible. It is usually stamped, engraved, or otherwise marked on a metal plate or directly onto the hull. The number is composed of 12 characters that uniquely identify the vessel. In addition to the transom, the HIN may also be found in other areas, such as the owner's manual or registration documents.
