Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet medication that works by irreversibly inhibiting the P2Y12 adenosine diphosphate (ADP) receptor on platelet cell membranes. This inhibition prevents ADP-mediated activation of the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa complex, which is essential for platelet aggregation.
