Homer Brothers Furniture in Chicago was founded around 1912 by five brothers, Joseph, Abe, Louis, Henry, and Jack who immigrated to America from the Ukraine in at the beginning of the 20th century. They first settled in Philadelphia and then moved on to Chicago where they made use of their wood carving and furniture making skills to start a business that lasted more than half a century.

Their Immigration story was similar to others of that time, with one brother (Joseph I believe) making his way over and then working to bring the others and extended family to America as they could afford to do so. The original family name was Ushomersky, and was shortened on arrival to the U.S.
