The term "recessive" refers to a type of allele in genetics that does not manifest its trait in the presence of a dominant allele. An individual must inherit two copies of a recessive allele (one from each parent) for the associated trait to be expressed. For example, in the case of blood type, the O allele is recessive to A and B alleles. Thus, a person with type O blood must have two O alleles.
