Why did jc Higgins stop producing guns?

JC Higgins never made guns of rifles. Sears contracted several gun manufactures to make guns and rifles for them using the J C Higgins brand name. This is the same for Wards and Western auto. All of them stopped selling guns around 1988 due to social pressure.
