Why did the copperheads oppose the draft?

The Copperheads, a faction of Northern Democrats during the Civil War, opposed the draft primarily because they believed it infringed on individual liberties and personal rights. They viewed the draft as an overreach of government power and argued it disproportionately affected the working class and immigrants, who could not afford to pay for substitutes.
