in FRESH WATER DROWNING, the water is HYPOTONIC as compared to the blood, so when it enters the lungs and through the alveoli, seeps into the blood vessels and ultimately the RBCs (water following the osmotic gradient)...the RBCs ultimately swell n burst open...HEMOLYSIS.
