Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is formed through a process called clinkerization, which involves heating a mixture of limestone (calcium carbonate) and clay or shale (silicates) in a kiln at temperatures around 1400-1600°C. This high-temperature process results in the formation of clinker, composed primarily of four mineral phases: alite, belite, tricalcium aluminate, and tetracalcium aluminoferrite. After cooling, the clinker is finely ground and often mixed with a small amount of gypsum to control setting time, resulting in the powder known as ordinary Portland cement. This cement is then used as a key ingredient in concrete and various construction applications.
