The Concern For Animal Rescue ?

American society has come a long way in many different ways. One of the most significant ways American society has advanced, is in animal rescue. The first efforts for animal rescue, or at least the organized concern for animal rescue was the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the A.S.P.C.A. It was founded in 1866 by Henry Bergh in New York City where the home office is still based. It was in emulation of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (R.S.P.C.A.) that begun in Great Britain in 1824.

The next year, in 1867, the A.S.P.C.A. was operating an ambulance for injured horses. Because of the many purposes horses and livestock filled, the organization focused mainly on them. However, they also sponsored advocacy of humane treatment for cats, dogs, and pigeons. In writing its first report in 1867, the organization proudly reported that a man had been sentenced to 10 days in prison for having beaten a cat to death. By 1988, 37 out of 38 states had enacted laws against cruelty that were legally enforced by the A.S.P.C.A. By the turn of the century, primary focus had evolved to be mainly on cats and dogs.

Today, there are many organizations, groups, and establishments that keep an eye out for animals in distress or in danger. There are Pet Adoption agencies, foundations, organizations, and groups that rescue, care for, and rehabilitate basically every creature known to man. Many of the organizations are manned by volunteers who devote their lives to the rescue of endangered animals. Laws to protect animals are very serious and the newspapers and television news reports are replete with stories of animal cruelty and the subsequent punishment of the offenders.

As science studies closer the mental and intellectual abilities of animals, mankind is discovering that we are not the only creatures on Earth with brain power and sensibilities. It is becoming obvious that other animals have not only the ability to communicate but that they may be able to provide some insight to the world around us. And we are finally recognizing that we are all connected to each other.
