Why a pale green gas is used in swimming pools?

Chlorine gas dissolves in water and breaks the cell walls of bacteria thus killing them.

Most pools do not actually add chlorine gas; they add chlorine compounds which slowly break down in water and release chlorine. They're much safer and easier to store and work with than the gas itself.
