Specialized fruit and vegetable farming is located around most large cities and also in areas with special climate and soil advantages. The location around large cities allows perishable fresh vegetables and fruit to reach their market quickly. These crops are frequently grown in greenhouses during the cold winter. However, consumers want fresh fruit and vegetables all year long, so other areas of the country which have longer growing seasons specialize in these crops. These regions include the Pacific coast, the Southwest, the Gulf Coast, and the Great Lakes.
