To make cupcakes from scratch, preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius or 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place cupcake cases into the cupcake tray. Cream butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Add beaten egg, a little at a time and beat well. Add vanilla essence and fold in flour gently. Add a little milk if the mixture is too dry. Put teaspoonful's of batter into the cupcake cases and bake for 12-15 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack. Decorate with butter or glace icing.
