The Nile River and itsyearly flooding brought (and still bring) a vast quantity of rich silt that fertelised the land surrounding it and made it arable farmland. As a result, groups of stagnent peoples were able to farm almost year-round and support a much greater population than that of a hunter-gatherer society.
