It forms when the cell engulfs food particles, enclosing them in a membrane-bound sac. Enzymes within the food vacuole then break down the food into usable nutrients, which are absorbed by the cell for energy and growth. Additionally, waste products are expelled from the vacuole once digestion is complete.
