Why are neon lights used for advertising?

Neon lights are an interesting thing. They provide years and years of service without ever burning out. They are made from the noble gases, so they are completely inert. They are capable of passing an electrical current though, and by doing this it provides an interesting colour/ appearance, depending on what gas is used/what additives are involved. They may be used either for their longevity or their bright colours, as they attract the eye.
