Why is Christopher-John in a panic in roll of thunder?

Christopher-John is in a panic in "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" because he is afraid that his sister Cassie has been caught by the Wallaces and he is worried about her safety. He knows how dangerous the Wallaces are and fears for Cassie's life.
