What causes a dogs tongue to turn purple tongue and difficulty breathing?

, I would like to know why my Yorkie/Poodle has developed a purple tongue, he hurt his back 3 weeks ago and is recovering, he also needs his teeth cleaned an perhaps one pulled, but we were waiting until he feels better. Can you help me, my vet does not know. thank you nne at wiseami@shaw.ca
