Can a network schedule legitimately contain more than one critical path?

In project management, certainly. It is not common for two paths to have identical timing, but it is certainly possible. And as soon as one or the other of them changes a bit you'll be back to one. You can plan a project with more than one or two critical paths, but reality is that one is going to 'emerge' as the true one.
