US presidents are elected to four-terms. They are allowed to serve a second term if they are re-elected but there is a two-term limit due to the 22nd amendment to the US Constitution which was ratified in 1951. Before this amendment there was a precedent set by Washington for the 2-term limit, but FDR was willing to break the precedent and ran for and was elected to four terms. He died in office before he could try for a fifth term.
The average per President of time served as President for all of the Presidents from Washington through Obama is 5.30 years. Mr. Jphelm cited the longest presidency above. The shortest was William Henry Harrison's 31 days in 1841.
