What is an example of anchorage dependence?

Anchorage dependence is a phenomenon where cells require attachment to a solid surface or extracellular matrix to divide and grow. For example, normal epithelial cells, which line surfaces in the body, need to adhere to a basement membrane to proliferate. If these cells are suspended in a culture medium without attachment, they will not undergo cell division, illustrating their dependence on anchorage for growth.
