Where do springtails live?

Close to ground surface is where springtails [Collembola] tend to live. They may be found within the topmost six inches of soil. Or they may be found along the surface wherever materials may be decaying and breaking down. Springtails particularly favor fallen branches and trunks from damaged or dying trees, leaf litter, and moss cushions.
