It is believed that in 1882 a machinist named Matthew Maguire thought of a holiday for laborers. The first Labor Day was held on September 5, 1882 in New York City. The event was not sanctioned by the government. In 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday. In the 1880s, America was in the middle of the Industrial Revolution. Many American workers worked 12 hour days seven days a week and well deserved a day off from their labors.
