What year did the public start using ATMs?

The first patent for an automatic teller machine (or ATM) was filed in 1960 by Luther George Simjian. Though not popular at first, other similar devices were invented and the idea caught on over the next decade. The machines became mainstream in the United Kingdom before being fully popularized in the United States.
