How did the religious leader the witch doctor help people?

Witch doctors were both spiritual leaders and doctors for their people, all rolled up into one. They knew herbal medicine, and could cure illness that way. They also spoke to spirits and gave advice, protective totems, sold spells and went into the spirit world to seek answers for their people's problems.
