What happens if a human enters a fairy ring and why should you never enter them?

A fairy ring is the concentric ring formed by fungal growth about a source of nutrition.

It is said that the fairies dance within such formations (a wild horde dance, or even a grand ball) and that if a human is foolish enough to join them in their revelry then he stand the chance of dancing with them for years and years.
