At the beginning of the book Elie Wiesel tells the story of Moishe the Beadle Why do you think none of the people in the village including Wiesel believe Moishe when he returned?

Moishe was not believed because he was viewed as an outsider and a loner; perhaps even mentally unstable prior to his departure and had no credibility. So when he returned with horrible accounts of what he witnessed, he was dismissed as crazy. I also think that the villagers chose not to believe him because knowledge calls for action. Once we are made aware of injustice, it becomes our responsibility to take action to right the wrong. If they were not ready for this responsibility, it was simply easier to deny it and do nothing.
