What did the south hope would happen during the civil war?

First, they hoped that Britain and France would grant them recognition and send military aid.

When Lincoln forestalled this by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, (making the war look like a crusade against slavery), they hoped that the North would simply become war-weary and vote Lincoln out in the '64 election.
