There are two main types of indoor cycling: track cycling done on a velodrome (a steep embanked track) or stationary cycling
In track cycling there are several different events
Scratch Race
- A bunch race over a number of laps with the person of the line first on the last lap been the winner
Team Sprint
- A teams event usually consisting of 3-4 riders, each rider does one lap on the front before leaving the race. The team with the fastest time of the complete distance wins
Team Pursuit
- A teams event usually consisting of 3-4 riders, the riders work together over a number of laps to get a fast time. The team with the fastest time wins
Flying 200m
- Used as a qualifing event for sprints, it is your time over 200m and you get 2-3 laps to pick up speed before you start
Sprints
- held between 2-3 people the first person over the line after the 3 laps wins
Time Trial
- over a certain distance usually 500m for women and 1000m for men. The person with the fastest time wins
Points Race
- a bunch race where the places on certain laps are delegated points, 1st over the line gets 5 points, 2nd gets 3 points, 3rd gets 2 points and 4th gets 1 point. The person with the most points at the end wins. If people are tied on points who ever got the most points on the last point lap wins
Progressive Points Race
- A type of points race where points are given every lap to the first rider only. The points increase each lap starting on one.
Handicap
- riders start at different marks around the track. giving slower riders a head start on the faster one. It is held usually of 4-8 laps. At the end all the riders should finish together if handicapped correctly
Madison
- a points race where riders compete together in teams of 2, only one rider is in the race at a time. The riders do a hand sling with each other to change who is in the race or not. The team with the most points at the end wins
Elimination
A bunch race where every lap the last rider of the line gets eliminated, measured by the back of the back wheel.
The other forms of indoor cycling are stationary cycling
Wind trainer
- A device that you lock you back wheel into. It has a roller that the bike wheel rolls on and you can change the resistance to make it harder or easier to pedal.
Rollers
- a device that using balance you ride on top off. It takes alot of skill to balance on them so you don't fall off
Stationary bike
- a bike that you ride that doesn't go anywhere. It generally has gears so you can increase or decrease the difficulty
