Is Beowulf the earliest recorded epic poem?

Beowulf is an example of Epic Poetry. It was probably based on myths and folktales that were handed down throughout time and eventually were written out as the tale of Beowulf. Some scholars believe that the story actually relates the slow change from Paganism to Christianity in the Northern Germanic tribes.
