Leadership is an important skill if you plan to be a manager or employer - or even just a club group leader! Here are some ideas from a very good article by F. John Reh - the link is below - that will help you be a better leader:

  • Know what the goal is - a good leader has a plan, and knows what needs to be done at what time.
  • Tell your group what to do, but not how to do it - encourage creativity and inventive thinking instead of trying to force people to do things your way.
  • Do "your homework" - do the research before you start a project or group effort, and know your facts. How have other people done similar things in the past? What steps, materials, money, etc. will you need? Get the information before you start so your group won't be stressed out because you forgot to do something.
  • Lead by example. Never ask anyone to do something that you would not do yourself. Let your group see you working right alongside them. Pitch in and help if you have time, even if you are "the boss!"
  • Demand Excellence, but not perfection. Nobody is perfect, and you should not expect any of your group to perform without any mistakes. However, you should expect them to do their best. It's a tough line sometimes, but remember to allow them to goof up once in a while.
  • Take care of your team. A good leader is not just a boss; but is also a mentor, father or mother figure, coach, shoulder to cry on, and cheerleader. Know your people - what are their hopes and dreams, their personal goals, their characteristics? If your group is criticized, you need to step up and take the negative press - but if there is praise, spread it around thick so that all the group can have some.
  • Keep your good name. A good leader does not cross the line and act irresponsibly. Be honest and dependable. Keep your Word and don't cheat, even in little things. Never look for "the easy way out." Stand behind your personal convictions.
  • Be humble. Don't let being the boss go to your head. Sure, you've accomplished a lot, but you also had a lot of good people helping you! Keep your feet on the ground and have a realistic opinion of yourself.
