This idea was often used to justify Imperialism and colonialism, portraying colonizers as benevolent figures bringing progress to "backward" cultures. However, it also reflected a patronizing and ethnocentric view, ignoring the autonomy and value of the societies being colonized. Ultimately, it served to rationalize exploitation and domination under the guise of altruism.
