Why is the novel 'Vanity Fair' considered to be without a hero?

The author, William Makepeace Thackeray, is theorized to have used the subtitle of his book ("A Novel Without a Hero") to call attention to his use of realism in the story. Real life situations don't have clear-cut heroes without flaws, and neither does Thackeray's novel.
