When is lutefisk eaten?

Ideally, never. However, lutefisk is a traditional dish of Norwegian Americans and has maintained its popularity despite the fact that it can strip silverware and is toxic enough that it had to be excluded from laws on the disposal of toxic waste.

In the US, lutefisk is normally eaten at Christmas. In families where this is not a part of the tradition, it is sometimes made once or twice as the children are growing up to serve as a rite of passage.
