Is scout in the book To Kill a Mockingbird a girl or boy?

The story's main family, lawyer Atticus Finch and his children Jeremy Atticus (Jem) and Jean Louise (Scout) are white. They do employ a black maid, who is a big influence on the children's upbringing since their mother passed away.
