There was no battle fought at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. It just happened to be the location where the Union Army caught up with the Confederate Army under General Robert E. Lee who surrenedered his command (The Army of Northern Virginia) to General Ulysses S. Grant.
Contrary to common belief this was NOT the official surrender of the Confederacy, and was NOT the official end of the War Between the States.
Note: There is another location (in Maryland) that bears the name Appomattox, where a battle of the same name was fought earlier in the war.
