Why are washing machines white?

White has traditionally been associated with clean, and we all desire to have clean clothes. We would not feel good about a washing machine that was grease colored, or the color of playground dirt.

In many parts of the world washing machines (and dryers) are available in a wide range of colours. Similar colours are available for most major appliances (fridges, stoves, range hoods, etc.)

As an example this year's series of Maytag washers is available in Black, Crimson Red, Lunar Silver, Oxide, Silver Metallic with White as well as White.
