A gastric band or balloon may sometimes be fitted as day-patient surgery. This is normally done as a day-patient case if the patient has not already been admitted to the hospital for pre-assessments, or pre surgical diets under medical supervision.

A gastric bypass will normally require an inpatient stay, since it is more invasive.
