A salt or ester of sulfuric acid, containing the anion SO42− or the divalent group OSO2O. Sulfate is a compound found in nature. It occurs naturally in water in various amounts. If a high level of sulfate

is in water, the water may have a bitter taste. Sulfates are also found in minerals, soil, rocks, plants and food. Sulfate is an acid not a gas though it could be turn into gas (if you had the right scientific apparatus.)
