Did mountains in central America make it difficult for ethnic groups to travel?

People tend to live where this is water and food. If they are living in a mountainous region people tend to stay in the valleys where there is most o the water and food is. If the mountains between the valleys are very high then people have dificulty moving from valley to valley. This applies regardless of the part of the world you were born in
