There are several foreshadowings in the novel when it comes to Cosette's character. Her beauty is often foreshadowed when her mother, Fantine, is described. Although her father wasn't described as a typically handsome man, he still came from upper class blood, which probably only later complimented Cosette's beauty. She was described to be the most beautiful baby, but that is "ruined" once she becomes a slave of the Thenardier's . Later in adolescence under the care of Jean Valjean, her natural beauty returns.
This theme also foreshadows love with another naturally beautiful character, Marius. Their first meeting almost seems like nothing to note at first, for Cosette is still a plain looking child. However, the natural beauty inside of her that is slowly blossoming on the surface is something Marius will come to notice, and will lead to a furthering a plot between the two of them in Les Miserables.
