At the Yalta Conference in February 1945, leaders from the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union—Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin—met to discuss the post-war reorganization of Europe. The U.S. sought to promote self-determination and establish democratic governments in liberated countries, while the UK aimed to maintain its colonial interests and influence. Stalin, on the other hand, wanted to expand Soviet influence in Eastern Europe and secure a buffer zone against future invasions. The conference resulted in agreements on the division of Germany and plans for the United Nations, but also laid the groundwork for future tensions during the Cold War.
