That depends on how hard you're prepared to work at it.
Advantages: it covers the past in breadth rather than nit-picking detail, and you get to see the big picture rather than tedious minutiae about Lord Burghley's gout and its imagined impact on policy.
Disadvantages: You have to learn a bit about a lot of different places, and if you don't put in some extra effort you'll end up with a rather superficial grasp of the whole. But it can make you a better-informed person in a world that mostly isn't really all that interested in medieval Wigan or colonial Scranton (yes, I know there wasn't one).
