Sam Houston early childhood facts

Sam Houston was born in Virginia on 2 March 1793.

He was the fifth of nine children and the fifth son.

His father died when he was 13.

He moved to Marysville, Tennessee when he was 14 and worked as a clerk in his brother's store.

He ran away from home when he was 16 and lived with th Cherokee Indian Nation and learned that language.

He had received no formal training or education.
