Can you get engaged without your parents permission?

In most cultures you can. (mostly Western cultures). In some countries religion and social rules dictate that the parents are a marriage for their children, so you can't just choose who you want to marry. (You could be shunned from your family and community. It's viewed as a sign of disrespect and against their social rules.) A culture like this would be found for example in Middle-Eastern countries.
